I looked up notes from a breastfeeding class that I took and they say when the
baby is more than 5 or 6 days old, it's ok to have an interval of up to 5 hours
at night, but the target is to have 8 feedings in a 24-hour cycle, so during the
day, you might want to feed a bit more frequently than every 4 hours. In fact,
I remember our pediatrician telling me if you feed during the day every 3 hours,
that helps the baby distinguish between day and night and helps get him on his
way to sleeping through the night. I think sometimes Darren only had 6 or 7
feedings in 24 hours though, so I wanna say you should have at least 6 feedings,
but check with your pediatrician. Of course I believe in feeding the baby as
soon as he's crying and if it looks to be time (i.e., at least 2 hours since the
last feeding.) But if he's not crying out of hunger, then the problem is
usually one or more of the following: 1) he's gassy, so you'll need to burp him
better; 2) he has a dirty diaper (although Darren never seems to mind that!); 3)
he's hot or cold (touch the back of his neck, which is the best place to feel
the baby's body temperature). There could be a couple other reasons too and I
found an article for you on that in case it's helpful:
