Q: The first time he climbed out was at 19 months out of a pack-n-play and,
luckily, he wasn't injured. Then, the other night, he started screaming like a
wild child so I came in to check on him and he was dangling by his hands and
feet from the top rail of his crib. It took him forever to stop shaking, so I
brought him to bed with us, and it was an awful night of sleep. I would prefer
not moving him to a bed yet (since he's only 21 months) but I'm not sure what my
other choices are. I've heard the tent is a bad idea because it only goes on
with velcro and kids can take them down easily. A friend recommended building a
lower platform but there's no way we can make that happen. Should I just bite
the bullet and move him to a bed? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
A: My 19-month-old son launched himself out of his crib a couple months ago for
the first time and I immediately ran out and got a crib tent, which has worked
totally fine so far. I don't think he can take it down because the crib tent we
got has what they call an “inside surround net”, which means the tent has a net
that wraps around the bottom of the mattress. The brand is Tots In Mind and the
model is Crib Tent II. Here's a link to couple retailers who sell them:
