Fortified juice boosts kids' omega-3 levels

http://www.reutershealth.com/archive/2009/04/24/eline/links/20090424elin001.html Your kid doesn't like fish? No problem. Let's try juice for giving him some omega-3. One big caveat though - the study was funded by Coca Cola. Bobo Dad

Kids' sleep issues may affect mental ability later

http://www.reutershealth.com/archive/2009/04/07/eline/links/20090407elin024.html I am on doctor but I always think that sleep affects mental functions. It's pretty amazing that it might have longer-term effects. Bobo Dad

Kids' self-control affects future overweight risk

http://www.reutershealth.com/archive/2009/04/06/eline/links/20090406elin003.html The study made over 1000 3-year-olds and 5-year-olds go throught two tests to try to correlate self-control and overweight risk. The results seem predictable. However, I particularly like the counterpart at the end of the article saying that being impatient isn't all bad. Bobo Dad

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090406/ap_on_he_me/med_obese_preschoolers_7 This shouldn't come as a surprise. Also as expected, minorities and under-privileged are faring much worse than their counterparts. Bobo Dad

Music lessons help children improve reading skills

The connection may not be obvious but it definitely makes sense. According to Psychology Of Music published by SAGE, children exposed to a multi-year programme of music tuition involving training in increasingly complex rhythmic, tonal, and practical skills display superior cognitive performance in reading skills compared with their non-musically trained peers. http://www.news-medical.net/?id=46911 Even if this is not true, isn't it great to have a kid who can play music? Lots of TV and Web harms kids' health

According to http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081202/ts_nm/us_health_children_5, One study cited in the report found that children who spent more than eight hours watching TV per week at age 3 were more likely to be obese at 7. 8 hours per week doesn't seem that much but it still has a possible negative effect!
